Anti-National Service&Hock Lee Riots
1) Anti-National Service Riots is a riot in Singapore that occurred in 1954 due to the communist influence. The persons involved were limited to the Chinese students in some Chinese Middle Schools.
Reasons for the riot :
· On 19 May 1954,British government decided to make young men ages from 18-20years old do part-time military service. The students were unwilling to defend a foreign government which in their time of need, deserted them. They wanted to drive the British out of Singapore and with the communist influence the demonstration led to rioting when the police arrived to disperse them and the police had to put down the riot.
2) Hock Lee Bus riot:
On 23 April 1955, members of Singapore Bus Workers' Union (SBWU) and were protesting against poor working conditions, long work hours and low pay. They also felt threatened by a rival union which was supported by the bus company to counter any labour action by SBWU. The strike was rumored to be instigated by pro-communists. However, it was more likely to have been fanned by anti-colonial sentiments. 12 May 1955,the fight broke out. 31 sustained injuries, and 1 was killed.
